Frequently Asked Questions
What is Music Therapy?
According to the AMTA (American Music Therapy Association): Music Therapy is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. Through musical involvement in the therapeutic context, clients’ abilities are strengthened and transferred to other areas of their lives. Music therapy also provides avenues for communication that can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves in words. Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.
Who are music therapists?
Music therapists are board certified clinicians with specialized training and degrees from approved academic programs. We are trained to use music to help people of all ages and circumstances achieve clinical goals related to physical, emotional, mental and/or cognitive health. There are approximately six thousand music therapists in the United States.
Why music?
Music is a workout for the brain unlike any other. When we actively engage in music, we work at physical, emotional and cognitive levels. Through music we empathize, socialize, communicate, imagine, create, explore, and learn. Music can be extremely complex and extremely simple, and this allows for an infinite spectrum of possibilities. People of all ages and conditions can participate and benefit from music regardless of the challenges or circumstances they are facing.
What happens in a music therapy session?
There are numerous approaches and schools of thought within the music therapy field. Berko Music Therapy is rooted mostly in music-centered music therapy. This means that the actual music is the central part of the clinical process. We also work within a resource-oriented approach, emphasizing the stimulation and development of our clients’ strengths and resources. Sessions are highly customized to best address the specific needs of each client. We may improvise music, play songs, sing songs, write songs, learn how to play an instrument, listen to music, talk about music, or explore thoughts and feelings elicited by music. Previous experience in music is not required to fully benefit.
Do I have to be good in music to benefit?
Absolutely not. You can benefit from music therapy whether you are a professional musician, an amateur musician, or someone without any experience in music whatsoever. As long as you like music you are good to go.
What type of music do you play?
We play all kinds of music from all different eras. The music that is played in a session depends primarily on the client’s musical preferences and cultural background. Music therapists are trained to support and stimulate the client’s active engagement in music. This may include listening/singing along to familiar songs, learning how to play an instrument, improvising or writing original music.
How long are the sessions?
Individual sessions usually last 50 minutes. Group sessions, workshops, talks and presentations, may vary in length depending on the goals and context of the program.
Where are the sessions?
Individual sessions are held in client’s homes, virtually through Zoom, or in a music studio. Community programs are held in the facility that sponsors it.
